Medicare Advantage Plans Compared for Your County, Your Doctors, and Your Budget
There are dozens of Medicare Advantage plans available across western Washington — and the right one depends on where you live, which doctors you see, and what prescriptions you take. I'm Charles, an independent Medicare broker serving the Puget Sound Corridor, and comparing Medicare Advantage plans is the primary focus of my practice. I sort through the options so you don't have to.
What Medicare Advantage Actually Covers — and Why the Details Matter
Medicare Advantage (also called Medicare Part C) is an alternative to Original Medicare, offered through private insurance carriers that contract with the federal government. These plans must cover everything Original Medicare covers, but most go further — adding prescription drug coverage, dental, vision, hearing, and other benefits that Original Medicare doesn't include.
The catch is that coverage details, provider networks, and out-of-pocket costs vary significantly from plan to plan and from county to county. A plan available in Pierce County may not be available in Kitsap County, and the same carrier's plan can have a different network in Mason County than it does in Thurston County. This is why comparing plans at the county level matters — and why a generic national plan list won't tell you what you actually need to know.
What is Medicare?
Medicare is a government-run health insurance program that helps cover healthcare costs for eligible individuals. It consists of different parts, each covering specific medical services, from hospital stays to prescription drugs.
Medicare is divided into four main parts:
- Medicare Part A – Covers hospital stays, skilled nursing care, hospice care, and some home healthcare services.
- Medicare Part B – Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and medically necessary treatments.
- Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage) – An alternative to Original Medicare, offered by private insurance companies, combining Part A, Part B, and often Part D coverage, along with extra benefits.
- Medicare Part D – Covers prescription drugs, helping lower out-of-pocket medication costs.
Understanding these parts will help you decide which combination of coverage best meets your healthcare and financial needs.
Why So Many Seniors in Western Washington Choose Medicare Advantage
Many plans carry $0 monthly premiums, which makes them an appealing alternative to Medicare Supplement plans that require a separate premium.
Most plans bundle prescription drug coverage (Part D) into a single plan, simplifying coverage and billing.
Extra benefits like dental, vision, and hearing coverage are commonly included — benefits Original Medicare does not cover.
Annual out-of-pocket maximums provide a ceiling on what you can be required to pay in a given year, a protection Original Medicare does not offer on its own.
Plans are available across all the counties I serve, though specific carriers and network structures vary by location.
Medicare Advantage isn't the right fit for every situation. For some people — particularly those who travel frequently or need access to specialists outside a defined network — a Medicare Supplement plan may be a better match. I walk through both options with every client so you can make the comparison with full information.
We also offer a side-by-side breakdown of both coverage types on the Medicare Advantage vs. Medicare Supplement page.
How I Compare Plans — and Why Being Independent Changes the Equation
Most Medicare Advantage plan comparisons you'll find online are generated by national aggregators running automated county pages. They show you a list of plans. They don't know your doctors, your pharmacy, or what you paid out-of-pocket last year.
My process is different because I work with you directly.
Step 1
Understand Your Priorities
Before I look at a single plan, I want to know which doctors and specialists you see, which pharmacy you use, and what your current prescriptions cost you. That information determines which plans are actually worth comparing for your situation.
Step 2
Compare Plans Available in Your County
Plan availability and network coverage vary across Pierce County, Kitsap County, Mason County, and the surrounding areas I serve. I pull the plans that are actually available where you live and filter them against your priorities — not a generic statewide list.
Step 3
Walk Through the Options Together
I meet in person — at your home, a local coffee shop, or wherever is convenient for you. I explain what each plan covers, what it costs, and where the tradeoffs are. You make the decision. I make sure you understand what you're choosing.
Step 4
Handle Enrollment When You're Ready
When you've chosen a plan, I handle the enrollment paperwork. If your situation changes or a better option becomes available at the next Annual Enrollment Period, I'll reach out.
As an independent broker, I'm not limited to one carrier's products. I compare plans across the carriers available in your county and recommend the one that fits your situation — not the one that pays the highest commission.
Medicare Advantage Enrollment:
When You Can Make Changes
Understanding your enrollment windows helps you avoid gaps in coverage and missed opportunities.
When can I first enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan?
Your Initial Enrollment Period begins three months before your 65th birthday, includes your birthday month, and extends three months after. If you're enrolling in Medicare due to disability rather than age, different rules apply. I can walk you through your specific window during a free consultation.
What is the Annual Enrollment Period for Medicare Advantage?
The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) runs from October 15 through December 7 each year. During this window, you can switch Medicare Advantage plans, move from Medicare Advantage to Original Medicare, or add or change a Part D drug plan. Changes take effect January 1.
Can I switch Medicare Advantage plans outside of AEP?
In most cases, you can only make changes during designated enrollment periods. However, certain qualifying life events — moving to a new county, losing other coverage, or qualifying for Extra Help — may trigger a Special Enrollment Period that allows you to make changes outside the standard window.
What Medicare Advantage plans are available in Washington state?
Washington state has a competitive Medicare Advantage market, but available plans differ meaningfully by county. Carriers and plan options in Pierce County, for example, are not identical to those available in Kitsap County or Mason County. The best way to see what's available where you live is to have a licensed broker pull the current options for your specific location.
How do I find the best Medicare Advantage plan near me?
The honest answer is that "best" depends entirely on your situation — your doctors, your prescriptions, your budget, and how often you use healthcare. A plan with a $0 premium isn't always the right choice if your preferred specialists aren't in network. I compare the plans available in your county against your specific priorities so the recommendation is built around you, not a generic ranking.
Is Medicare Advantage available in rural parts of western Washington?
Yes, though plan availability and network depth vary in less densely populated counties like Mason, Jefferson, and Grays Harbor. Some rural areas have fewer carriers competing, which makes independent comparison even more important — I can help you identify which plans include local providers and what your options look like if you need care outside your immediate area.
Serving Seniors Across Western Washington
I'm based in the Puget Sound Corridor and work with seniors across a wide stretch of western Washington — from the greater Tacoma area through the Kitsap and Olympic peninsulas and down the coast.
My primary service counties are Pierce, Kitsap, and Mason. I also serve seniors in Thurston, Clallam, Jefferson, Grays Harbor, Lewis, and King counties.
If you're not sure whether I cover your area, reach out — I'll tell you directly.
I also work with seniors in Kitsap County, including those near Bremerton who are looking for an independent Medicare broker nearby rather than a call-center representative they'll never meet in person.
Ready to See Which Plans Are Available in Your County?
A free 15-minute consultation is the fastest way to find out which Medicare Advantage plans are actually available where you live and how they compare for your doctors and prescriptions. There's no obligation and no pressure — just a straightforward conversation with someone who does this as their primary focus.
If you're already taking prescription medications, submitting your prescription list lets me run a side-by-side cost comparison before we talk, so you come to the conversation with real numbers in hand.
